The Bangor Region is located between the rugged coastline of Downeast Maine and the spectacular North Woods of Maine. The city was incorporated in 1791 and named for an Irish hymn entitled "Bangor."

Allagash Wilderness Waterway
This magnificent, 92-mile-long ribbon of lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams winds through the heart of northern Maine's vast commercial forests. The area is also used extensively in the winter for ice fishing and snowmobiling even though there are no groomed trails. Open May 15 - October 1; fee is charged.
